Sipar publishes a new book "Learning to recognise rabies"

A press conference at the Institut Pasteur in Phnom Penh timed to coincide with the publication of the book entitled "Learning to recognise rabies", an illustrated book of 44 pages in Khmer intended to promote the fight against rabies in the kingdom. The Institut Pasteur of Cambodia and the SIPAR NGO were at the origin of this initiative.

Apprendre à connaître la rage

Right at the start, Dr. Sowath Ly reminded us of the continually worrying figures relative to the "mad dog disease" situation, the nickname given the disease by Cambodians : 800 deaths a year of which 50% affecting children under 15 years of age, 600 000 bites a year, 50% dogs infected by the virus, four to five million dogs in the country and only 40 000 persons vaccinated.

While reminding us that the disease was fatal in 100% of cases if the patient was not vaccinated, Dr. Sowath Ly also indicated that the vaccination against rabies was 100% efficient and that reducing mortality by 50% within five years and totally eradicating the illness in the kingdom was one of Institut Pasteur Cambodia’s main priorities.
