Sothik book by Marie Desplechin Sothik Hok, illustrations by Tian l'Ecole des Loisirs

Marie Desplechin visited Cambodia for the first time in 2014. She was asked to join Sipar by Suzanne Sevray who has been in charge of the international side of the Ecole des Loisirs for many years. Marie followed the teams in the field and met Sothik, Sipar’s director in Cambodia. After a three week stay, they decided to work together on the book and Tian agreed to illustrate it.

It’s a novel about Sothik’s youth. He was born in 1967 in a Cambodia in turmoil, torn apart by American bombs and weakened by injustice. He is three years old when the civil war is in full force and eight when the Khmer Rouge take over. Everything changes from one day to the next. Money is abolished, books destroyed, religion forbidden, private property no longer exists. Sothik and his family have to leave their house leaving everything behind and constantly prove their allegiance to the new regime. But that isn’t enough! The Khmer Rouge brutally decide to remove children from their parents in order to educate them better. Sothik joins a group of children of his own age. The family no longer exists, terror and famine take over ….

Sothik, by Marie Desplechin and Sothik, illustrations by Tian, available in book shops in France and from L’Ecole des Loisirs, 96 pages, 13€. From age 12.
