With as many as 4,700 people injured and 1,800 deaths on the roads in 2018 across Cambodia, traffic accidents remain the leading cause of death in the Kingdom. In 2019, 78% of traffic accident fatalities were motorbike riders, and 78% of those motorcyclists who lost their lives weren’t wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Moreover, in recent years, the number of two-wheelers has been on the rise: motorcycles make up 80% of registered vehicles in Cambodia today and account for more than 70% of overall fatalities, hence the focus on helmet wear for motorbike riders for our campaign this year.

Aiming to change mindsets and behavior of motorists in the long-term, the third Safe Driving Campaign will host various activities throughout the week in 26 different venues (Total service stations and others) reaching out to thousands of people in 14 provinces and cities across Cambodia. Engaging activities and quizzes on road use for children and adults, free eyesight checks for motorists and demonstrations of safe motorcycle riding will be conducted to draw attention to road safety practices such as putting on helmets and seatbelts, as well as to the dangers of exceeding speed limit, overtaking dangerously, using mobile phones and drunk driving.

Mr Asif Iqbal, Managing Director of Total Cambodge, commented that “Road Safety is a key pillar of Total Cambodge’s CSR policy since the Total Group developed a "Road Safety Cube Campaign" in line with the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 initiated by World Health Organization*.” Total Cambodge teamed up with Sipar NGO since 2017 to promote road safety mainly through Total’s specially designed Safety Cubes, a set of illustration materials and activities for children to understand traffic signage and law practices, used in Sipar’s mobile libraries in Cambodia’s rural areas and public schools. This 3-year project will benefit more than 10,000 Cambodians, raising awareness on safety of road use among adults and children living mainly in rural areas, where knowledge of traffic law is still very poor.

Last year’s Safe Driving Campaign hosted by TOTAL and partners under the slogan “Drink or Drive” held in November 2018 encouraged vehicle users to avoid alcohol when on the road and reached out to 20,000 Cambodians. This year, Total Cambodge has gathered support from more partners to join their efforts for the years to come.
