Playground libraries for children in hospitals

Give a smile to hospitalized children and their parents through reading, play and educational activities.

In Cambodia, hospital waiting rooms are often over-crowded and patients spend hours waiting their turn. People often travel long distances in order to benefit from health care and stay in hospital for the duration of their treatment accompanied by their  families. Some children who are hospitalized long term under-perform at school.

Since 2009, thanks to a partnership with UNICEF, Sipar has set up 19 playground libraries dedicated to patients, and primarily to children in pediatric wards in provincial hospitals. These playground-libraries are managed by facilitators and the management committee of the provincial service of health in each province. Playground facilitators are either volunteers or hospital staff, and are usually under the direct supervision of the pediatric unit of each hospital.

11 playground libraries were supported by Sipar, whilst the management of 8 others has now been completely taken over by the hospital staff team.

In 2020 : Reinforce the reading corners of 3 health facilities in Ratanakiri, Kratié and Steung Treng and capacity building of the facilitators managing the 3 reading corners

«When hospitalized children come to the playground libraries, they are happy as they completely forget their pain. They are able to play games, play with a ball, enjoy stories and other educational activities.»
